For this reason a quality tripod is any professional photographers best friend, however there are ways to take stable photographs without this piece of equipment; In a pinch, utilizing a few camera holding techniques will help steady your shot, and better yet would be resting your camera on something solid.

But in situations such as group photos where you find yourself lacking a tripod, need your hands free and simply have nothing to rest your camera on, perhaps the most ingenious way to stabilize your camera is to use a lamp.

The thread size of the bolt on a lamp shade is exactly the same size as most camera mounts; 1/4" - 20, so your camera will easily attach. With a couple quick rotations, your camera will not only be perfectly stable, but you will have an additional light source at your fingertips.

Be careful however not to over-tighten the two fixtures together, exceeding the depth on your camera may damage the body.
